Our Story

Every life saved is a story that continues.

The Knock

When most people hear a knock at the door, it signals something ordinary or welcome. A neighbor stopping by. A package delivery. Someone returning what was borrowed.

For first responders, that knock can carry a very different weight.

It can mean standing on a porch in the middle of the night, uniform still on, heart heavy, preparing to tell parents that their child will never come home. A short drive turned into a permanent goodbye. A life full of promise lost in a crash that never had to happen.

The Ripple Effect of Loss

That moment does not end at the front door.

Loss ripples outward through families, classrooms, teams, and entire communities. A teammate takes the field carrying grief instead of gear. An educator returns to class and faces an empty desk, wondering who that student might have become. Friends replay the what ifs. Families begin the unimaginable work of learning how to live with absence.

The impact is shared, lasting, and deeply personal.

How We Began

A Bold Intervention

Impact Teen Drivers was born in response to this preventable devastation.

We began by serving first responders and educators because of the stress they carried every day. First responders who arrived at scenes only to find a young person lost to something 100 percent preventable. Educators who had to return to classrooms and stare at an empty desk, thinking about what could have been. Families left with lifelong heartbreak because one simple decision changed everything.

Those experiences made one thing clear. Education needed to do more than inform. It needed to prevent.

Impact Teen Drivers was created as a service organization dedicated to evidence-based education that addresses the root causes of reckless and distracted driving. From the beginning, our focus has been on supporting those who serve young people and communities by providing research-informed programs, training trusted local leaders, and equipping schools and partners with tools that can be delivered with fidelity.

What emerged was a bold intervention grounded in research, driven by compassion, and focused on prevention.

Our Work Since 2007

Dedicated to Changing Reality

Since 2007, Impact Teen Drivers has been dedicated to changing this reality.

What began as a focused effort to serve communities in California has grown into nearly two decades of evidence-based programming reaching schools, agencies, and communities nationwide. The opportunity to expand beyond our home state has been a privilege earned through trust, partnership, and a shared commitment to prevention.

Across the country, our work remains grounded in the same principles that shaped our earliest programs: addressing reckless and distracted driving, strengthening shared roadway responsibility, and supporting those who serve young people every day.

We empower teens, parents, educators, first responders, and community leaders to make safer choices and to speak up when safety is at risk.

What Guides Our Work

Grounded in Evidence

Research and behavioral science inform everything we do to support lasting behavior change.

Addressing Root Causes

Programs focus on reckless and distracted driving behaviors that lead to preventable crashes.

Empowering Communities

Tools and training support teens and the adults who influence them in schools, families, and communities.

A Culture of Speaking Up

Education reinforces that speaking up for safety is expected, supported, and effective.

Beyond Education

Changing the Culture of Driving

The mission of Impact Teen Drivers goes beyond education alone.

Our work focuses on changing the culture of driving itself by shifting norms, strengthening shared roadway responsibility, and reinforcing the idea that safety belongs to everyone who uses the roadway.

The goal is a future where first responders knock on doors far less often. Where parents do not receive the call. Where classrooms stay full and dreams remain intact.

A future where safety is expected
A future where shared roadway responsibility is the norm
A future where lives are not cut short by preventable choices
